California Sea Grant is now soliciting applications for one-year research projects by early-career faculty. Proposals, up to $60,000, will support the research of a new faculty member employed at a California-based university to address topics aligned with California Sea Grant’s strategic plan and state priorities. This year additional emphasis will be on proposals that respond and target objectives specific to our Resilient Coastal Communities and Economies and Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture focus areas. Webcast & Report – Offshore Aquaculture in Southern California
Just in time for National Aquaculture Week, the Aquarium of the Pacific, Sea Grant, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released the second report of their Offshore Aquaculture Workshop series. This workshop continues the conversation with Federal and State agencies about how to improve regulatory confidence in aquaculture operations. The workshop introduced a model as a possible tool for decision making, and includes information on animal health management, protected species concerns, and a summary of the permitting process.
Webcast speakers include Dr. Jerry Schubel, president and CEO, Aquarium of the Pacific; Dr. James Morris, marine ecologist, NOAA’s National Ocean Service and National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science; and Dr. Paul Olin, aquaculture specialist, California Sea Grant and the University of California, San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
NOAA Announces $3M in Sea Grant Aquaculture Research Program Funds for FY2016
Depending on the availability of funds, NOAA Sea Grant expects to have up to $3M available for a national competition to fund new FY 2016 aquaculture research projects. This is part of the overall plan to support the development of environmentally and economically sustainable ocean, coastal, or Great Lakes aquaculture.

Sturgeon Aquaculture Tour
Sterling Caviar recently hosted a tour of their sturgeon farm and caviar processing facility in Elverta, California for an audience of state legislative and agency officials, accompanied by post-graduate Fellows from the California Sea Grant Program. Organized by the Office of the State Aquaculture Coordinator and the California Aquaculture Association, participants learned about this local success story and the long-term commitment required of farm-raising caviar, which takes an average of 10 years to yield its crop.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Aquaculture Program Welcomes New Sea Grant Fellow
Jonathan MacKay
Jonathan MacKay recently joined the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s aquaculture program as a Sea Grant fellow. He received his master’s degree in environmental science from California State University, Los Angeles in 2014. For his thesis work he modeled an oil spill in Santa Monica Bay, examining oversights in policy and analyzing the ecological effects on protected species and areas. Jonathan is married with no pets, house plants, or plans to have kids. He and his wife Diana, corporate counsel for a biotechnology company, recently relocated from Santa Monica to Midtown, Sacramento. They enjoy traveling, so “the fewer commitments outside of work and marriage the better.”
